Tom Holland’s fourth outing as Peter Parker is a brave, baggy, and surprisingly mature blockbuster that proves Marvel’s ace is still very much in the pack.

Brand New Day: The Spectacular, The Soap Opera, and The Spidey Sense”
THE CRITICAL CONSENSUS
As of its theatrical run, Spider-Man: Brand New Day holds a respectable 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes .
While this is technically the lowest score of Tom Holland’s tenure (compared to Homecoming’s 92%, Far From Home’s 91%, and No Way Home’s 93%), it is a testament to the franchise’s consistency that a score in the high 80s is considered a slight dip .
As one critic noted, the film “certainly doesn’t disappoint” . Yet, others argue that while it is “watchable without ever being transporting,” it feels like a step back towards the “mid-tier” Marvel movie .”GROUNDED” IS THE NEW BLACK
The most common praise for Brand New Day is its return to character-driven storytelling. After the multiversal chaos of No Way Home, director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) scales things back.
The film is “dedicated to giving the character some growth and grace” . It eschews the galaxy-ending stakes for a more personal look at Peter Parker, now entirely alone after erasing himself from the world’s memory .
Several reviews have noted that this feels like “the most grounded, mature Spider-Man story yet” . The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin even went so far as to call it “the best Spider-Man film since the Tobey Maguire era” .
THE PERFORMANCES: HOLLAND’S HEARTBREAK
Tom Holland delivers perhaps his finest performance to date. The actor, who has played this role for nearly a decade, brings a world-weariness to Peter Parker that we haven’t seen before.
He is no longer the eager kid; he is a young man haunted by loss and isolation .
Jon Bernthal’s return as Frank Castle/The Punisher is a highlight.
His dynamic with Holland provides a sharp contrast in ideologies and a “pure pleasure” to watch .
Meanwhile, Sadie Sink’s MCU debut as Jean Grey has been described as “absolute perfection” and “the most inspired casting since Holland himself” .
She brings a “chilling vulnerability” to a character that feels more broken than villainous .Zendaya, Holland’s real-life partner, continues to be the emotional anchor of the series.
The “real yearning and perplexity” between them this time around elevates the film’s quieter moments .
THE PROBLEM WITH THE WEB
Despite its emotional strengths, the film suffers from a bloated runtime and narrative overstuffedness.
Critics at the ABC and RNZ have pointed out that despite the subtitle, the film is “fixated on the previous films” .
The plot feels “overstuffed and under-done” . The telepathic villain plot, while containing a shocking reveal, often feels like a distraction from the more compelling drama of Peter trying to reconnect with MJ .
Visually, the film has received mixed reviews. While the action choreography—courtesy of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team—is praised for its “kinetic energy” , the overall look of the film is described as “deeply disappointing” .
The New York setting feels like a green-screen background rather than a lived-in community, lacking the “springy spontaneity” of Homecoming .
THE VERDICT
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a film of contrasts. It is ambitious yet safe, emotionally resonant yet visually flat, mature yet thematically messy.
It represents a brave attempt to reset the character after the seismic events of the previous film, but it often gets tangled in its own lore and the need to setup future MCU projects .Ultimately, the film is carried by its actors.
Holland, Zendaya, and the brilliant sup opporting cast of Bernthal and Sink ensure that when the film focuses on the “hangout” moments, it soars .
It may not be a perfect Brand New Day, but it proves that even in its “mid-tier” form, Spider-Man remains one of Marvel’s most compelling heroes.
